Privacy policy

What Sited keeps about you and your sites, where it goes, and how to see, change or delete it.

In effect from [effective date]

A draft. The parts in square brackets are still to be filled in.

Who we are

Sited, at sited.design, is run by [Company legal name], [Registered postal address]. We decide what Sited keeps about you and why, and we answer for it. Questions about your data go to [privacy email].

Sited shows no advertising and does not sell what it knows about you.

What we keep

  • Your account. Your email address, the name you give, your role, and when the account was made and last signed in. Your password is held by our database provider in a form that cannot be read back. If you continue with Google, Google tells us your name, your email address and the address of your profile picture; we never see your Google password.
  • Your work. The projects and documents in your workspace; for each site, its name, address, position and boundary, and the site data Sited loaded for it; and the images you upload.
  • Feedback. What you send with Send feedback: whether it is a problem, an idea or something else, your message, the page you were on, the version of Sited, and the name and version of your browser and operating system. It is emailed to the team with your email address to reply to.
  • Payments. Your plan, its status and dates, and the references our payment provider gives your customer record and subscription. Card numbers and billing addresses go to our payment provider and never reach Sited.
  • Connections. When your browser loads Sited, our hosting and database providers see its IP address and what kind of browser it is, and keep these in logs for a short time to keep the service secure and find faults.

Why we keep it

  • To give you what you signed up for: your account, your work and your plan.
  • To keep Sited secure and working, and to answer and fix what you report.
  • To take payment and keep the records that tax and accounting law ask of us.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it.

In your browser

Sited sets no cookies of its own and uses no analytics or advertising trackers. It keeps four things in your browser’s storage, each needed for something you asked it to do, so it asks for no consent to them:

  • your sign-in session, until you sign out;
  • the page you were on when asked to sign in, until you are back on it;
  • which parts of the editor’s tour, list and hints you have seen;
  • a place you type on the home page, until your first board starts there or a week has passed.

Clearing your browser’s data for sited.design removes them.

Services your browser asks

When you look at a map, search for a place or load a site’s data, your browser asks these services directly. Each sees your IP address and the part of the world you are looking at, and each has a privacy policy of its own.

  • OpenFreeMap, for base maps.
  • Photon, for place search.
  • An Overpass server, which answers questions about OpenStreetMap data, for the buildings, streets, green space, water and land use around a site.
  • NASA POWER, for the wind at a site’s position.
  • Google, when you choose Continue with Google.

Who works with us

  • Our hosting and database providers serve Sited, store your account, work and files, and send the emails that confirm an address or reset a password.
  • Our payment provider takes payment, keeps your card details and sends receipts.
  • Our email provider delivers your feedback to the team.

Each handles your data only to do this work for us, under a contract that requires them to keep it safe. Your account, work and files are stored in [the country or region where the database and files are stored].

How long we keep it

  • Your account, your work and your feedback, for as long as the account exists. What you delete, such as a document, a project or an image, is removed at once, and leaves our database provider’s backups as they are replaced.
  • Records of payments, for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
  • Connection logs, for a short time.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what we keep about you, have it corrected or deleted, ask us to stop or limit using it, and take it elsewhere. You can change your name, email address and password yourself in Account settings, and export your boards from the editor.

There is no button yet for deleting an account. To delete yours, write to [privacy email] from the address you sign in with. We delete the account with its workspace, documents, images and feedback, and tell you when it is done.

If you think we have got something wrong, tell us first. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

Children

Sited is not for children under [minimum age]. If we learn that a younger child has made an account, we delete it.

Changes

When Sited changes what it keeps or who it shares it with, we update this page and the date at the top, and tell account holders by email before a change that matters to them applies. The Terms of use cover the rest of how Sited works.
